OUR STORY
A Vision Born from Experience.
We know firsthand that informed choice and continuous support are the cornerstones of a positive birth experience. But we also know that financial barriers and systemic bias prevent too many families from accessing the care they deserve. M.A.M.A. Community Foundation was founded as a Mutual Aid initiative to bridge that gap.
Our mission is to redefine maternal health equity by providing accessible, free, and low-cost support directly to those most impacted by medical neglect. We don’t just provide services; we build power, ensuring every parent has the resources, advocacy tools, and community to demand a safe and dignified birth.
OUR OFFERS
M.A.M.A. Community Foundation strengthens families by providing equitable access to childbirth education, doula care, and community events. Through our dedicated birthworkers, leadership, and collaborative partnerships, we ensure every family receives the support they deserve. We uplift families from pregnancy through early postpartum with these core programs:
Childbirth Education: Preparation for labor, birth, postpartum, and newborn care through virtual workshops available nationwide.
Doula Support: Access to free to low-cost birth doula services via our Community Doula Network for families in the DC, Maryland, and Virginia (DMV) area.
Community Events: Connection with resources and other families through monthly M.A.M.A. Meetups and community initiatives.

Each program, partner match, and client interaction is intentionally designed around our four core values: Knowledgeable, Intuitive, Nimble, and Deliberate.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS
(A GOVERNANCE ROLE)
Guiding Strategy for Sustainable Impact. The Board of Directors serves as the Foundation’s governing body, responsible for strategic planning, fiduciary oversight, and ensuring long-term mission alignment. This is a hands-on leadership role that combines governance with active operational support.
Purpose and Role
- Governance: Provides leadership in setting priorities and maintaining strong, mission-aligned governance.
- Stewardship: Supports organizational development and financial health.
- Outreach: Strengthens partnerships and community visibility.
- Expertise: Contributes essential knowledge in areas like nonprofit leadership, fundraising, legal compliance, and maternal health.
Commitment and Expectations

Who Should Apply
We seek committed leaders who reflect the diversity of the communities we serve. As a BIPOC-led organization, we prioritize governance rooted in lived experience and equity. We are particularly looking for individuals with expertise in nonprofit leadership, fundraising, legal counsel, finance, maternal health (clinical or policy), program evaluation, and marketing to help lead our strategic growth. Your expertise will help lead our strategic growth and ensure we remain a powerful force for birth justice in the DMV.

ADVISORY GROUP
(AN ADVISORY ROLE)
Community Insight for Strategic Action. The Advisory Group is a community-centered body that provides specialized consultation and lived expertise to the Board. This group is crucial for ensuring our programs are culturally relevant, nimble, and truly meet the needs of the families we serve.
Purpose and Role
- Guidance: Provides insight on maternal health, postpartum wellness, parenting, and community needs.
- Perspective: Shares lived experience and vital cultural perspectives.
- Review: Offers feedback on new programs, resources, and initiatives.
- Status: This group serves in an advisory capacity only and does not hold governance or fiduciary responsibilities.

We welcome dedicated individuals who reflect the communities we serve—parents, caregivers, community members, and professionals—who want to lend their insight and lived experience without the time or financial commitment required of Board service. As a BIPOC-led organization, we believe those most impacted by maternal health inequities should lead the solutions. We are specifically looking for members who want to lend their lived experience, cultural perspective, and community insight to ensure our programs remain nimble, relevant, and grounded in birth justice.
